Post insightThe old claim that synthetic oil causes gasket leaks in high-mileage engines was based on early 1970s synthetic formulations. Modern Group III and IV synthetics are fully compatible with all OEM gasket materials. If an engine leaks after switching to synthetic, the gasket was already failing — the better cleaning properties of synthetic simply revealed it faster. Do not pay a premium for conventional oil out of fear.
The number on the tire sidewall (e.g., "Max 44 PSI") is the maximum safe pressure for the tire. The correct inflation pressure for YOUR vehicle is on the driver door jamb sticker or in the owner manual. Over-inflating to the sidewall max causes center-strip wear, harsh ride, and reduced traction. Under-inflating causes shoulder wear and overheating. Check pressure cold (before driving) with a digital gauge.
Modern engines with modern oils are designed for 7,500-10,000 mile oil change intervals per manufacturer specifications. The 3,000-mile interval was correct for 1990s engines with conventional oil. Quick-change shops profit from this outdated advice. Follow your owner manual or oil life monitor system. Exception: severe duty conditions (towing, extreme temps, dusty environments) warrant shorter intervals.
A steady check engine light (MIL) indicates an emissions-related fault that needs diagnosis but is not immediately dangerous. A FLASHING check engine light indicates active misfires that are damaging the catalytic converter in real time — continued driving can cause $1,000-3,000 in additional damage within minutes. Pull over safely, let it idle, and tow if it continues flashing.
