SMS-based two-factor authentication is vulnerable to SIM swapping — use an authenticator app

SIM swap attacks redirect your phone number to an attacker-controlled SIM, intercepting all SMS codes. Per NIST SP 800-63B, SMS-based 2FA is deprecated for high-value accounts. Use a TOTP authenticator app (Authy, Google Authenticator) or hardware keys (YubiKey). For critical accounts (email, banking, crypto), hardware keys provide the strongest protection available to consumers.
