Wood moves across the grain, never along it — design every joint with this in mind

A 12-inch wide board can expand or contract 1/4 inch across the grain with seasonal humidity changes. Along the grain: essentially zero movement. Tabletops attached rigidly to aprons will crack. Breadboard ends without allowance slots will split. Always use slots, elongated holes, or figure-8 fasteners for cross-grain attachments. This single principle prevents the most common furniture failures.

End grain absorbs 10-15x more finish than face grain — seal it first

End grain is like a bundle of drinking straws — it wicks finish deep into the wood, leaving it darker and blotchy. Before applying stain or finish, seal end grain with a washcoat (dewaxed shellac thinned 50:50 with denatured alcohol). Let it dry 30 minutes, then proceed with your normal finishing schedule. This one step eliminates the most common finishing complaint in woodworking.

Table saw kickback kills more woodworkers than any other shop accident

Per CPSC data, table saws cause ~67,000 injuries per year in the US, with kickback being the primary mechanism. The workpiece binds between the blade and fence, and the spinning blade launches it back at the operator at 100+ mph. Prevention: use a riving knife (not just a splitter), never stand directly behind the blade, use push sticks for cuts under 6 inches wide, and never remove the riving knife.
