The 3-4-5 method is more accurate than a framing square at scale

For layout of foundations, decks, or framing, the Pythagorean theorem (3-4-5 or multiples like 6-8-10, 9-12-15) provides greater accuracy over long distances than a framing square, which amplifies error at scale. Diagonal measurements between corners must match before pouring concrete. This is standard practice per the ACI 117 tolerance standard for concrete construction.

Adding water to concrete on the truck weakens the final product permanently

Every gallon of water added to a yard of concrete reduces compressive strength by approximately 200 PSI. Per ACI 318, specified water-cement ratios exist for a reason. Asking the driver to add water because the mix is hard to work with trades short-term convenience for long-term failure. If the mix is too stiff, use a superplasticizer admixture (mid-range water reducer) that improves workability without increasing the water-cement ratio.

Control joints must be cut within 6-12 hours of finishing or cracks form randomly

Concrete shrinks as it cures — control joints create intentional weak points so cracking occurs at those lines instead of randomly across the slab. Per ACI 360, joints should be cut to 1/4 the slab depth within 6-12 hours (or 4-6 hours in hot weather). Spacing: no more than 2-3x the slab thickness in feet (4-inch slab = 8-12 foot spacing). Late cutting is the most common cause of random mid-panel cracking.
